- Step 1:
The first step in getting on your state’s ballot to run for US president is to file an appropriate form with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC). The FEC website is available at www.fec.gov.
On that website, you will need to go to the ‘get started’ page and then click on ‘file’ to find the correct form.
To file a petition to run for president, you need to complete the form called ‘Petition for Candidacy’ and forward it to the FEC.
The FEC will send you a letter saying your petition is complete.
You will have to pay a filing fee to the FEC. This fee is a flat rate of $87. Either you can pay this fee by check or by credit card.
Note: you cannot pay by credit card online.
- Step 2:
Submit a petition to your state’s election board.
After you have filed your Petition for Candidacy with the FEC, you will be required to submit a copy to your state election board.
